Christchurch 🌤️ Éclaircies & 23°C
Je suis en Nouvelle-Zélande depuis hier ! Le vol avec Emirates était excellent (première classe !). Je loge au YHA de Christchurch Central. C’est une charmante petite ville (on ne devinerait jamais qu’elle compte 500 000 habitants !). C’est l’automne ici, et les feuilles des arbres affichent des couleurs magnifiques. La météo est excellente, environ 25°C l’après-midi ! Le climat ici ressemble beaucoup à celui de l’Arc Lémanique en Suisse. Aujourd’hui, j’ai grimpé sur une colline, et demain ce sera shopping (tout est vraiment bon marché avec le dollar néo-zélandais !!).
I’ve been in New Zealand since yesterday! The flight with Emirates was excellent (first class!). I’m staying at the Christchurch Central YHA—a charming small town (you’d never guess it has 500,000 inhabitants!) It’s autumn, and the leaves are multicolored. The weather is excellent, around 25°C in the afternoon! The climate here is similar to that of the Lémanic Arc. Today, I climbed a hill, and tomorrow I’ll go shopping (everything’s really cheap with the New Zealand dollar!!)

Arthur’s Pass ➔ Franz Josef 🌧️❄️ Pluie & Neige (2°C)
Quel changement radical de climat pour le premier jour de mon tour ! Le foehn est tombé, laissant place au froid et à la pluie. Nous avons traversé les plaines avant d’attaquer la montée dans les montagnes. Passage par Arthur’s Pass où il faisait un froid de canard, puis en continuant de grimper, la neige s’est mise à tomber vers 900 mètres d’altitude ! Les paysages sont absolument grandioses. Enfin, nous avons atteint la fameuse côte Ouest, réputée pour sa pierre de Jade, pour arriver le soir à Franz Josef : un petit village niché au pied d’un glacier unique (le bas du glacier n’est qu’à 200 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer !).
What a radical climate change for the first day of my tour! The Foehn wind stopped, so it’s cold and raining! We drove through the plains and started climbing into the mountains! We passed through Arthur’s Pass, where it was very cold, and then continued upward—it started snowing at 900 meters! The scenery is absolutely magnificent! Finally, we reached the famous West Coast known for Jade and arrived in Franz Josef in the evening—a small village at the foot of a glacier plunging into a rainforest!

Franz Josef Glacier 🌤️ Éclaircies & 13°C
Une magnifique journée commence, et il est temps de chausser les crampons ! Oui, oui : une grande première pour moi (je devrais vraiment en faire une liste ^^), l’escalade et la marche sur un glacier ! Celui de Franz Josef est unique au monde : situé à seulement 200 mètres d’altitude, c’est le seul qui plonge directement dans une forêt pluviale tempérée (une jungle de montagne), et il affiche la plus forte progression (alors que la plupart des glaciers reculent !). 6 heures intenses de marche sur la glace vive !
A beautiful day begins, and it’s time to put on my crampons! Yes, yes—a new thing I’ve never done (I should make a list ^^) Climbing the glacier! This glacier is unique—it’s at 200 meters, it’s the only one plunging into a rainforest (temperate jungle), and it has the largest advancement (most are receding!) 6 hours of walking on the ice.

Makarora ➔ Queenstown 🌤️ Grand Froid & 10°C
Un réveil glacial ce matin ! C’est la toute première fois que je vois du givre depuis que j’ai quitté la Suisse. La vallée ici est extraordinaire : elle ressemble énormément au Valais, à la différence près que la rivière est complètement sauvage, sans la moindre maison ni ville à l’horizon — c’est incroyable ! Nous prenons la route de Queenstown à travers les Alpes du Sud. Des paysages hors du commun ! Nous avons franchi un col pour basculer dans la vallée de la ville : des plaines, des lacs et des montagnes fabuleuses ! Queenstown est la capitale mondiale de l’aventure et des sports extrêmes. On s’est arrêtés au spot d’origine du saut à l’élastique (Bungy jumping) ; je n’ai pas sauté, ce n’était pas assez haut, lol !
A lovely frozen morning! The first time I’ve seen frost since leaving Switzerland. The valley is extraordinary—it looks like the Valais, except the river is completely wild, no houses, no city—it’s unbelievable! We’re hitting the road to Queenstown through the Southern Alps! Extraordinary landscapes! We crossed a pass and arrived in the valley of the city—plains, lakes, fabulous mountains! Queenstown—the world capital of adventure and extreme sports! We stopped where bungee jumping starts; I didn’t jump—it wasn’t deep enough lol.

Le Grand Saut à Queenstown 🪂 Skydiving (13°C)
Il faisait à peine 2°C ce matin quand j’ai quitté ma chambre pour faire quelque chose d’absolument extraordinaire : un saut en parachute (skydiving) !! J’ai sauté d’un avion volant à 100 km/h à 4 000 mètres d’altitude, en plein dans le vide ! C’était tout simplement incroyable du début à la fin. Le choc initial en quittant l’avion, les 45 secondes de chute libre qui semblent durer 4 secondes à 200 km/h, puis l’ouverture du parachute où l’on plane dans le ciel comme un oiseau, sans rien entre ses pieds et le sol… Époustouflant !! Cet après-midi, balade tranquille dans cette ville magnifique. Énormément de scènes du Seigneur des Anneaux et d’X-Men ont été tournées dans la région ! Ce soir, c’est la fête car la ville ressemble trait pour trait à une station de ski en Suisse (c’est d’ailleurs une vraie station de ski en hiver ici ^^).
It was 2°C this morning when I left my room to do something absolutely extraordinary—skydiving!! So, I jumped from a plane traveling at 100 km/h at 4000 meters altitude into the void! It was simply incredible from start to finish! The first jump when you leave the plane, the 45 seconds of freefall that seem like 4 seconds, falling at 200 km/h, and then the parachute opens and you fly in the sky like a bird, seeing nothing between your feet and the ground! Incredible!! This afternoon, I’ll take a walk in this wonderful city! Many scenes from « The Lord of the Rings, » « X-Men, » and others were filmed in this area!

Doubtful Sound Fjord 🛶 Kayak & Croisière 13°C
Aujourd’hui, nous avons quitté la capitale de l’aventure pour rejoindre un lac. De là, nous avons pris un bateau puis un bus pour atteindre la base du majestueux fjord de Doubtful Sound. Un magnifique navire nous y attendait pour une traversée et une nuit à bord au cœur du fjord pendant 24 heures ! Les paysages sont irréels, entre mer calme, montagnes enneigées et forêt pluviale dense. Incroyable ! Nous avons même fait du kayak au milieu du fjord pendant que le navire était à l’arrêt.
Today we left the adventure capital to reach a lake where we caught a boat and then a bus to the base of Doubtful Sound Fjord. A nice boat is waiting for us for a 24-hour fjord crossing! Incredible scenery between sea and snow-capped mountains with rainforest! Unbelievable! We did kayaking while the boat was stopped.

Fjords ➔ Alexandra 🌨️ Neige & Pluie (8°C)
Réveil matinal à bord du bateau au cœur du fjord, puis retour au port. Après avoir traversé la vallée et le lac, nous avons retrouvé notre bus pour traverser de magnifiques plaines : des champs de blé dorés contrastant avec des montagnes sombres et enneigées… Un décor saisissant à couper le souffle ! Vraiment grandiose. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à la patinoire de curling de la région, un endroit très populaire et pro, où nous avons fait une petite partie. Et maintenant, nous sommes dans un petit village près d’Alexandra, et il neige ! Demain matin, tout sera probablement tout blanc ! Les prévisions annoncent d’ailleurs de la neige pour toute la semaine dans cette vallée !
Early wake-up this morning on the boat in the fjord, back to the port! After crossing the valley and the lake, we joined our bus and drove through gorgeous plains—yellow wheat, dark, snowy mountains—an incredible, breathtaking scene! Really gorgeous! We stopped at the curling rink of the area, a highly popular and professional place, where we played some curling. And now we’re in a small village near Alexandra, and it’s snowing!

Alexandra ➔ Christchurch 🌦️ Gel & Pluie (10°C)
Un réveil très givré ce matin — enfin, c’était plus gelé que véritablement enneigé. Déception !! lol. Nous sommes partis vers 9 heures pour louer des VTT et nous nous sommes offert une belle balade d’une heure à travers les collines matinales, c’était superbe ! Ce fut notre dernière activité avant de reprendre la route pour Christchurch. En soirée, le froid et la pluie se sont invités, alors au lieu d’aller voir le match de rugby au stade, nous sommes restés bien au chaud dans un bar pour faire la fête et regarder le match à la télé pour notre dernier jour tous ensemble !

That was the last activity we did before leaving for Christchurch! In the evening, it was raining and cold, so we stayed warm in a bar, had a party, and watched the rugby match for our last day together.

Envol pour Auckland ⛈️ Orages & 13°C
Dernier jour sur l’île du Sud (Te Wai Pounamu en maori) ! J’ai pris un avion d’Air New Zealand pour rejoindre Auckland ! C’est une belle ville nichée entre mer et collines, très verdoyante. J’ai grimpé tout en haut de la tour d’observation (la Sky Tower), qui possède une architecture magnifique ! Je loge dans un hôtel Formule1 flambant neuf : une chambre double avec cuisine, salle de bain privée et vue panoramique sur la ville (et sur la tour d’observation) — ça fait un bien fou ! Tout ça pour seulement 45 NZD !

I’ve been in New Zealand since yesterday! The flight with Emirates was excellent (first class!). I’m staying at the Christchurch Central YHA—a charming small town (you’d never guess it has 500,000 inhabitants!) It’s autumn, and the leaves are multicolored 🙂 The weather is excellent, around 25°C in the afternoon! The climate here is similar to that of the Lémanic Arc 🙂 Today, I climbed a hill, and tomorrow I’ll go shopping (everything’s really cheap with the New Zealand dollar!!)

What a radical climate change for the first day of my tour! The Foehn wind stopped, so it’s cold and raining! We drove through the plains and started climbing into the mountains! We passed through Arthur’s Pass, where it was very cold, and then continued upward—it started snowing at 900 meters! The scenery is absolutely magnificent! Finally, we reached the famous West Coast known for Jade (the stone, yes… xD) and arrived in Franz Josef in the evening—a small village at the foot of a « warm » glacier (the base of the glacier is 200 meters above sea level!)

A lovely frozen morning! It was 2°C this morning when I left my room to do something absolutely extraordinary—skydiving!! So, I jumped from a plane traveling at 100 km/h at 4000 meters altitude into the void! It was simply incredible from start to finish! The first jump when you leave the plane, the 45 seconds of freefall that seem like 4 seconds, falling at 200 km/h, and then the parachute opens and you fly in the sky like a bird, seeing nothing between your feet and the ground! Incredible!!
This afternoon, I’ll take a walk in this wonderful city! Many scenes from « The Lord of the Rings, » « X-Men, » and others were filmed in this area!
Tomorrow, with the group, we’re going summer luging, and tonight, we’ll party because the city looks just like a ski resort in Switzerland (it actually is a ski resort in winter here^^)

Today we left the adventure capital to reach a lake where we caught a boat and then a bus to the base of Doubtful Sound Fjord. A nice boat is waiting for us for a 24-hour fjord crossing! Incredible scenery between sea and snow-capped mountains with rainforest! Unbelievable! We did kayaking while the boat was stopped 😀

Early wake-up this morning on the boat in the fjord, back to the port! After crossing the valley and the lake, we joined our bus and drove through gorgeous plains—yellow wheat, dark, snowy mountains—an incredible, breathtaking scene! Really gorgeous! We stopped at the curling rink of the area, a highly popular and professional place, where we played some curling 😀 And now we’re in a small village near Alexandra, and it’s snowing! Tomorrow morning, it will probably be all white! The weather forecasts predict snow for the entire week in this valley!

A nice, frosty wake-up this morning—well, more frozen than snowy! Disappointing!! lol We left around 9 o’clock to hire mountain bikes and took a nice 1-hour ride across the morning hills—very pretty! That was the last activity we did before leaving for Christchurch! In the evening, it was raining and cold, so we didn’t go to watch the rugby match; we stayed warm in a bar, had a party, and watched the match for our last day together 😀

Last day on the South Island (Te Wai Pounamu in Māori)! I took the Air New Zealand plane to the capital, Auckland! It’s a beautiful small city between the sea and hills, very green! I climbed the observation tower—it has beautiful architecture! I’m staying in a brand-new Formule1 hotel—a double room with a kitchen, bathroom, and view of the city (including the observation tower)—so refreshing! All of this for only 45 NZD!
